The exceptionally talented Kelvin van der Linde fittingly secured the title in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup with a win. The 17-year-old South African triumphed at the final race at the Hockenheimring, coming home 1.0 seconds ahead of his fiercest rival for the title Kasper H. Jensen (Denmark). Van der Linde, who won five of the season’s nine races, succeeds Sweden’s Ola Nilsson as the new champion. German Matthias Bäurle finished third in the final race.
The four racing legends mixed it with the talented youngsters, and were involved in a number of spectacular duels that thrilled the fans in Hockenheim. The best-placed of the four was DTM legend Manuel Reuter (51/Germany) who finished tenth, just ahead of Le Mans winner Éric Hélary (47/France) in eleventh. Le Mans and DTM champions Frank Biela (49/Germany) and Laurent Aïello (44/France) came home 13th and 15th. Stratosphere diver Felix Baumgartner (44/Austria) enjoyed an impressive race debut, climbing from 24th on the grid to finish in 19th place.
Van der Linde came through brilliantly from fifth to win in style. He wrapped up the championship with 348 points, with Jensen runner-up on 295 points.
