Following a long, six week break since the Durban street races in June, the Ferodo Racing team will be back in action at Phakisa Freeway in the Free State on August 3 and 4. Round six of the nine-round WesBank Super Series of national championship circuit races sees Ferodo’s youngest driver, 15-year-old Kelvin van de Linde, well on his way to emulating his father and grandfather and winning a national title. The Johannesburg grade 10 pupil is aiming to become the youngest ever Engen Volkswagen Cup champion in only his second season of senior national championship circuit racing. With five wins – one in each of the rounds run so far – four second places and two thirds in his Ferodo VW Polo, he has amassed a total of 291 points and enjoys a comfortable lead of 65 points over defending champion Devin Robertson.
Gennaro Bonafede, competing in class T of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship in a Ferodo VW Golf GTi, matched his younger team-mate’s win and a second in Durban to revive his championship hopes and will be looking to improve on his current, unfamiliar fifth place in the point standings. He is 52 points behind class T leader Graeme Nathan (VW Golf GTi). A disastrous second round in Cape Town saw the 21-year-old Pretoria University engineering student from Johannesburg fail to score any points after being sidelined with engine problems.
Both Van der Linde and Bonafede have enjoyed successful tests at Phakisa in the run-up to the series’ first visit to the Free State this year and are keen to get back into action on what is regarded as one of the best driver’s circuits in the country. The third ‘young lion’ member of the Ferodo Racing Team, 18-year-old Ernie van der Walt, is currently fifth in his second season in the Formula Volkswagen Championship, with 30 points, 56 behind leader Jayde Kruger. The grade 10 pupil from Hoopstad in the Free State has been keeping himself busy since achieving his best results of the season in Durban, with a third and a fourth in the two races. He makes his second appearance in the international JK Asia Series for the Meritus.GP team at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium this weekend (July 28 and 29) in the second of two European rounds of the series. He made his debut in the Asia Pacific region driver development series at Paul Ricard in France on July 21 and scored a fine second place in his first race.
